| Dear CAP, |
| |
| Does it hurt to get a pap smear if
you've never had sex before, and it's your first time getting
one? |
| |
| "Wondering" |
| |
| Dear Wondering, |
| |
| That's a hard question to answer because it is different for
everyone. Also it depends on your definition of "hurt".
Most of us think of our first pap smear was uncomfortable but
not painful. It helps to relax during the exam. If you are all
nervous and tensed up it makes it harder for the doctor to do
and more uncomfortable for you. Also, you said you never had
sex before, but have you used tampons? If you have, then that
will make it easier too. The best thing you can do is tell the
doctor that it is your first pap smear and he or she will explain
things step by step and will try to be as gentle as possible.
Take a friend with you to give you moral support in the waiting
room. |
