“Kids Having Kids” Photography Exhibit Sparks Conversations on Teenage Pregnancy in Our Community

ProjectCAP and Community Arts of Elmira are hosting a photography exhibition “Kids Having Kids: Portraits and Stories of Teen Parents” on Wednesday, October 5th from 5-7 pm at the Community Arts of Elmira community gallery located at 413 Lake Street in Elmira.

“Kids Having Kids” is a collection of black and white photographs and poignant stories created by young women whose lives have been changed by an early pregnancy. This exhibit will serve as a catalyst for family, student and community discussions as it explores teen pregnancy and parenting in our community.

ProjectCAP’s “Kids Having Kids” is funded through a grant from the New York State Department of Health’s Comprehensive Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Initiative. With this grant, projectCAP provides comprehensive, medically-accurate, evidence-based programs that are proven to promote abstinence, delay the onset of sexual activity, and reduce the practice of risky sexual behaviors among youth. In addition, projectCAP staff and partners implement programs to expand educational, social, recreational, vocational and economic opportunities and provide alternatives to sexual activity for area youth.

“The evidence is undeniable — when young people get programs that give them the skills they need to make responsible decisions and take care of themselves, they avoid early pregnancy and risky behaviors.  We are so pleased to be part of making sure Chemung County teens get the help they need,” added Miller

For 15 years, the projectCAP has been a trusted resource in the Southern Tier.  CAP is a partnership of area agencies committed to reducing teen pregnancy in our community. Partners include: The Economic Opportunity Program, Planned Parenthood of the Southern Finger Lakes, Southside Community Center, Chemung County Department of Health, Chemung County Youth Bureau, Elmira City School District, Arnot Ogden Medical Center – Health Center for Women, GST BOCES, Southern Tier Interfaith Coalition, and the YWCA of Elmira and the Twin Tiers.
