| Question: |

| My daughter is 9 years
old. When should I begin telling her about "the facts of
life"? |
| |
| Answer: |
| |
| Learning about sexuality is a life long process.
Parents should provide age appropriate information from the
time a child is born. (See "Just the Facts") Simple
things like using proper names for all body parts is a good
place to start with very young children. As a child gets older
and begins to ask questions, always answer simply and truthfully.
If you don’t know the answer to a question it is okay
to tell your child that and to offer to find out for her. Some
children may not ask questions, but you can always use "teachable
moments". If your neighbor is pregnant, explain what that
means at a level your child can understand. Show that you are
open to questions and are willing to talk about any subjects.
This will make it safe for your child to talk to you and hopefully
she will not rely on myths picked up from peers. |
